Workplace Relationship Consulting

A One-to-One Leadership Intensive:

Widen the Lens

Seeing clearly, together

Widen the Lens is a one day, 1:1 consulting intensive for leaders who want to understand a workplace dynamic more clearly and create room for something different to happen.

This is not a standardized program.

The work is shaped around the situation you bring, the perspective of the people around you, and what emerges when we work together.

We begin with an initial fit conversation to make sure the work is a good fit and to understand what you are bringing into the room.

Before the intensive, I also gather a small amount of anonymous perspective from people who work with you.

Questions might include:

  • When this leader is at their best, what do you notice?
  • What strengths do you experience in their leadership?
  • What happens when they are under pressure?
  • What changes in the relationship or wider team when stress rises?
  • What would you like to experience differently in order for work to feel better?

This isn’t a 360 assessment, personality profile, or performance review.

It’s another vantage point.

When you’re inside a system, it can be difficult to see the whole thing.

These perspectives are brought alongside your own experience, not to determine who is right, but to help us see what is happening between people.

This isn’t eight hours in a chair.

The day is structured around three 90-minute deep dives, with generous space between them.

There is no predetermined curriculum. Each conversation follows what we’re exploring and uncovering together, though the work generally moves through a few layers.

First, we understand you in context.

We start with the situation that brought you to the intensive, the dynamics involved and what’s already been tried. We look at what about this situation is particularly sticky, and understand what is at stake for you. We explore ideal outcomes, and what might be holding the current patterns in place.

Next, we slow down what happens in the present.

We look closely at the moments where things tend to go sideways, what happens between you and those involved, what gets activated in you, how you respond, and what happens next. Stakeholder perspectives also give us another vantage point on the pattern. You will complete the same set of questions yourself, giving us a chance to look at your experience alongside that of your team. Together we will explore the places where those perspectives align, and where they differ.

Then we widen the lens.

Once we can see more of the system, we explore what else might be possible. What is the actual goal you’re working towards? What assumptions or fears may shape the way you approach it? We explore what alternative pathways could be taken, and what might be possible if you participated differently.

And we work with whatever emerges between us as we dive deep. Sometimes that becomes the most useful material of all.

You will have time to step away, walk, answer an email, eat lunch, or simply let the work settle.

Each conversation gives us material to work with. When we return, we can often see something differently.

The space between sessions is part of the work.

You won’t leave with a binder of strategies.

You will leave with a clearer understanding of yourself and the pattern you’re part of, new ways of understanding what’s happening between you and the people around you, and a more grounded sense of what you can do differently.

We’re aiming for a wider perspective and more capacity to shift patterns that have been locked in place.

Human relationships are still going to have friction, but the aim is to understand what’s been driving current dynamics and choose a different path.

Each intensive includes one individual integration session via phone or video chat to reflect on and consolidate the shifts you have experienced, with the option to book additional sessions as needed to support the consultation work.

This is where we reflect on and make sense of how you brought the work back into your actual workplace.

  • What happened?
  • What did you notice?
  • Where did the old pattern show up?
  • What did you do differently?
  • What is becoming possible?

Integration gives us space to notice what has shifted, consolidate new learning, and consider how to keep showing up differently within the system.

The organization pays.

The leader does the work.

The whole system benefits.

Changes in a leader’s relational participation move through relationships, conversations, decisions, and culture.

This is an investment in the person whose position gives them significant influence over what happens next.

It is a way of holding folks with the most power accountable for how they use it.

Widen the Lens is designed for reflective leaders who are willing to participate in the work rather than outsource the problem. It’s for leaders who are curious about how to responsibly use their positional power, and who are open to exploring their ability to influence shifts in workplace dynamics from where they stand.

You don’t need to know what’s wrong.

You don’t need a theory.

You need a situation, relationship, or pattern that you can’t quite figure out, and a willingness to look at it from a different position.

You don’t need to know what needs to change.

You do need a willingness to get curious about your own position in the system.

I’m here to help you widen the lens, rather than stay stuck in the middle.
